My reflection on the balance between tradition, technology, and touch.

There’s a moment, just before a cut, when the shop goes quiet. You line up the mark, feel the weight of the saw, breathe once, and let the teeth do their work.

I’ve been a woodworker and an engineer for long enough to have seen a lot of new tools come and go — some that changed everything, some that quietly disappeared. But AI feels different from most of what’s come before. It doesn’t just add another tool to the bench — it adds another kind of thinking entirely.

As someone who straddles the line between technology and craft, I’ve been sitting with this question: where does AI fit in a practice built on intuition, patience, and touch?

The Distance Between Hand and Machine

Woodworking teaches you through failure as much as success. Splintered edges, tear-out, glue-ups that don’t quite close. The material pushes back and you learn from the resistance.

AI processes patterns invisibly. It doesn’t wait for glue to cure or nurse a bruised knuckle. The gap between how it works and how craft works is real, and it matters.

But I’ve come to think that gap is interesting rather than disqualifying.

Where AI Actually Shows Up in the Shop

Right now, AI is most visible in design software — Fusion 360, Rhino, SketchUp. It can generate multiple design variations quickly and test them for efficiency. For me, that’s genuinely useful. I have habitual patterns in how I design, and something that disrupts those patterns can shake me toward a direction I wouldn’t have found on my own.

Beyond design, there are things AI can handle that don’t diminish the craft at all:

  • Predicting wood movement based on humidity
  • Optimizing board layouts to reduce waste
  • Simulating how a joint will respond under load

None of those replace the moment when you pick up the board and feel the weight of it, or notice the way the grain runs. They just handle the math so you can focus on the rest.

The Risk: Letting It Take the Wheel

There’s a real risk I want to name: allowing AI to dominate the process removes the small imperfections that make a piece feel human. The slight asymmetry in a hand-carved detail. The way a hand plane leaves a surface that catches light differently than a sander would. These things emerge from human hands, not data models.

The solution isn’t to reject AI — it’s to reintroduce humanity into what it produces. Our role might not be to outthink the machine, but to be the part that puts the soul back in.

The Workshop Ahead

My shop right now contains hand planes, digital calipers, routers, and CAD software on the same workbench. The entire history of woodworking sharing one space. I think that’s where things are going — not a replacement of old instincts by new tools, but a rhythm where they work together.

For small independent operations, thoughtful integration of AI could be transformative. It could level the playing field — giving one-person shops access to the kinds of precision and analysis that larger studios use.

But someone still has to pick up the board. Someone still has to select the wood, make the aesthetic choices, feel the quiet pride when a client runs their hand over a finish and smiles. AI won’t do that. It won’t remember how the wood sounded when you first cut into it.

The Hands Still Make the Work

Woodworking has always adapted to change while holding onto what endures. AI is one more tool among many — neither master nor equal, but useful support.

The hands still make the work. The heart still gives it meaning.
